ACNE TREATMENT IN BOGOTA

Acne: Causes, Types, and Effective Treatments in Bogotá

Acne is one of the most common complaints in my dermatology practice, and it doesn't just affect teenagers. Many adults also suffer from it, especially due to hormonal changes, stress, or environmental factors like Bogotá's pollution.

Although it's common, it shouldn't be seen as normal or inevitable: acne is treatable and can be improved with professional help. 👨‍⚕️💬

🔍 What is acne?

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that occurs when pores become clogged with sebum (oil), dead skin cells, and bacteria. It presents as:

  • Pimples or blackheads ⚫

  • Red or pus-filled pimples 🔴

  • Deep or painful nodules

  • Residual scars or stains 🕳️

It most frequently affects the face, chest, back and shoulders.

🤔 What causes it?

The causes of acne can vary from person to person, but the most common factors are:

  • Hormonal changes (puberty, menstrual cycle, pregnancy)

  • Stress and lack of sleep 😴

  • Diet high in sugar or dairy 🧀

  • Use of comedogenic cosmetic products

  • Genetic factors

  • Humid climate or environmental pollution (like Bogotá!)

Types of acne and treatment

🧪 Types of acne

Not all acne is the same, so a dermatological diagnosis is key. Some types include:

  • Comedogenic acne: blackheads and whiteheads without inflammation.

  • Inflammatory acne: red or pus-filled pimples.

  • Cystic acne: deep, painful nodules with a risk of scarring.

  • Adult acne: common in women over 25 years of age, with outbreaks on the chin and jaw.

💡 How is acne treated?

Acne treatment should be individualized, based on your skin type, acne severity, and other factors. As a dermatologist, I can recommend the following during your consultation:

🔹 Medical topics: retinoids, antibiotics or azelaic acid.
🔹 Oral: antibiotics, contraceptives or isotretinoin (Roaccutane®), under strict monitoring.
🔹 Personalized care routines.
🔹 In-office procedures: deep cleansing, chemical peels, laser, or microneedling for scars.

Avoid self-medicating or using “natural products” uncontrollably, as they can worsen the condition.
